Whale Aware

Whale Aware is the story of how a mobile app will be used to decrease the number of whale strikes by ships in busy shipping lanes in the US.

Fatal collisions between endangered whales and commercial ships is a crucial concern for sanctuaries on the Pacific coast of the United States.

To work towards limiting these collisions, shipping companies, government officials and scientists have joined forces to reduce whale strikes by developing the Spotter Pro App.

Data supplied by volunteer sighting networks - whale watchers, fishing communities, recreational boaters, large commercial operators – will assist with NOAA’s mission to protect these endangered species.
