The film is a short monologue, by a character named Masha, from the play "The Seagull." “The Seagull” is a play about actors and writers, theater and the torments of the creative process.
It is one of the most popular works of Anton Chekhov, who is perhaps the most widely read Russian playwright in the United States and Europe.
When encountered in abroad, it is a play imported from and therefore about Russia.
And, whenever performed, it is a text unavoidably subject to the intervention of actors, directors, and designers.
I took up Masha’s monologue, interpreting it as a Masha, a Russian, an American, an actress, and a director.
I performed it alone, using the handheld camera both as a mirror and a character.
